PsoC® CapSense Evaluation Kit Future Electronics has developed the PSoC CapSense Evaluation Kit (EVT0023) to enable users to gain familiarity with touch button and touch slider operation. The tools and hardware provided introduce PSoC and Capsense to the users and also allow them to implement their own bespoke Capsense solution. Capacitive sensing is fast becoming the solution of choice for front panel display and media control applications. Popularised by leading edge music players, mobile phones and white goods, capacitive sensing touchscreens, touchpads, keypads, sliders and buttons offer a cleaner, more modern design as well as a more durable, hermetically sealed solution for almost any electronic product. The Cypress CapSense capacitive sensing interface is the industry’s most flexible capacitive sensing solution. Based on the popular PSoC architecture, Cypress CapSense solutions allow users to modify hardware up to and even during production. And unlike “hard” touch-sensing alternatives, CapSense PLUS enables designers to integrate multiple system functions such as LED driver/backlight control, motor control, voltage monitoring, temperature sensing and control, power sequencing, I/O expansion, gyro and accelerometer sensing, and ambient light sensing. PSoC CapSense devices also provide popular communication interfaces such as I2C, SPI, UART and USB. By integrating these mixed analogue and digital functions into a self-contained programmable system on-chip, you can minimise time-to-market, board space and system cost for your CapSense-enabled product. Overview The PSoC CapSense Evaluation Board, featuring CY8C21434 from Cypress, demonstrates the use of PSoC in a CapSense keypad application. Eight buttons, a slider and a potentiometer interface have been implemented. For standalone operation the button status is indicated with LEDs. The slider status or the potentiometer output is displayed on a two digit, seven segment LED display. A buzzer provides an audio feedback on keypad operation. The board can be connected to a PC, via RS-232 port, for visualising the keypad status on the PC. The application software required is included on the CD supplied with the kit. The PSoC CapSense Evaluation kit can be used to demonstrate the use of PSoC in a CapSense application, In addition the board can also be used to interface with and to calibrate a user’s bespoke keyboard design. The following features blocks are implemented on the PSoC CapSense Evaluation Board. Figure 1 gives a block diagram of the board. • CapSense control using PSoC CY8C21434 • 8 CapSense buttons with LEDS to indicate the button status • 1 slider bar • Potentiometer to generate voltages in the range 0V to 5V • Two digit, seven segment displays for indicating slider position and potentiometer voltage. • Buzzer to provide audio feedback of button and slider operation • Port for MiniProg programmer and I2C interface • RS-232 port for connecting to PC • 16-pin header for providing access to additional I/O pins • Eight-way DIP switch is used to select alternate functions Future boards are available free to members of Future Electronics’ Board Club.
