Small multiple connectors enable more space saving and reliability

The ERNI Small Multiple Connectors (SMC) family from TE Connectivity, with a grid of only 1.27mm, allows for more reliable and compact connections to be made inside a wide range of motor-control applications.

The ERNI SMC series of connectors addresses the fact that modern motor drives and controllers are becoming smaller and more integrated, while boasting more features than ever before. The connectors feature a dual-row 1.27mm pitch with data rates up to 3Gbit/s, enabling high-speed signal interfacing between tightly-integrated PCBs.

The ERNI SMC family includes a range of different shapes such as straight or angled mate, as well as variable pin counts from 12 to 80. PCB pegs are included, and the connectors are rated for 500 mating cycles with a vibration-resistant contact design to ensure reliability even when under harsh conditions commonly found in motor control environments.

Designed to provide a signal path for control logic, feedback processing and monitoring circuits, ERNI SMC connectors are best suited for linking control PCBs to communication PCBs, or digital signal processor (DSP) boards to I/O expansion boards.

The ERNI family also includes:

  • MicroSpeed Power modules rated up to 18A per contact, ideal for power distribution
  • MicroCon connectors with 0.8mm pitch supporting the same 3Gbit/s data rate for even more dense designs
  • MiniBridge cable-to-board connectors for sensor and auxiliary wiring into motor controllers

These modules work in tandem with the SMC connectors allowing engineers to build more complex motor circuits into small footprints.
