ToF sensor offers high ranging accuracy at up to 1.3 m
The VL53L4ED from STMicroelectronics, which has a completely invisible laser light source, maintains high accuracy with any color target, and regardless of the target reflectance.

The VL53L4ED is a time-of-flight (ToF) ranging sensor for use in proximity-sensing applications that require high accuracy over a short distance up to 1.3 m in normal temperatures, and up to 1.15 m at high temperatures up to 105°C.Â
Special settings also provide for accurate distance measurement at a range of up to 800Â mm when operating in dim light of up to 5 klux in intensity.
The VL53L4ED embedded on-chip processing helps to reduce design complexity and bill-of-materials cost relieving the burden on the host, so a less powerful and less expensive microcontroller can be used.
Like all ToF sensors based on ST FlightSense™ technology, the VL53L4ED performs absolute distance measurement regardless of the target color and reflectance.
The VL53L4ED combines an infrared vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) emitter and a single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) array of photodetectors. Diffractive optical elements above the emitter enable the sensor to perform ranging in various ambient lighting conditions, and through a range of cover glass materials.Â
The VL53L4ED is a direct derivative of the VL53L4CD, with which it is pin-compatible.
