Miniature isolated and insulated gate driver for thyristors adds safety and immunity

With reliable magnetic isolation, the STSID140-12 from STMicroelectronics is a miniature isolated and insulated gate driver for thyristors.

The immunity to the noise from electromagnetic Interference (EMI) is twice that of a high-voltage suppression capacitor, and energy transfer from low voltage to high voltage is also optimized.

Safe signal and power transfer is supported as the STSID140-12 gate driver prevents unwanted ac and dc currents from flowing between two parts of the system. The magnetic isolation needs no output supply and offers increased efficiency as well as high data rates.

STSID140 is tested against short-duration surges, from sources such as lightning strikes to provide immunity to very high levels of voltage.

In industrial applications, the insulated voltage of up to 1.25kVrms provides functional insulation for thyristor driving, and the DFN package enables the saving of space on the board.

The high creepage distance of 3.92mm is compliant with the IEC 60335-1 standard for 250Vrms, with material group I and overvoltage category II.

Offering high static immunity to IEC 61000-4-4 EFT at ±4kV, the STSID140-12 gate driver also offers over-voltage of ±4kV according to IEC 61000-4-5, and is compliant with EN 55016-2-1, CISPR 16-2-1 for conducted noise, EN 55016-2-3, CISPR 16-2-3 for radiated noise, and ESD IEC 61000-4-2 for contact up to ±2kV.

The 40mA output makes the STSID140-12 suitable to drive thyristors in industrial ac motor control, as well as for managing inrush current in ac-dc applications.
