Breakthrough from new all‑in‑one 3D direct Time of Flight LiDAR module

As the first 3D direct Time of Flight (dToF) sensor module from STMicroelectronics to feature up to 54 x 42 zones of high-resolution depth sensing, the VL53L9CX, combines up to 2.3k zones, with ranging from below 5cm to 9m, plus multi‑target detection and zone-based distance measurement.

The VL53L9CX 3D dToF LiDAR module has low power consumption, needs no calibration and offers extremely simple integration, in addition to being inherently compliant to privacy.

A unique feature of the VL53L9CX module is the integration of dual-scan flood illumination which replaces conventional sequential dot scanning. This enables the LiDAR module to detect small objects and edges, capturing both 2D infrared (IR) images and 3D depth map data, while eliminating motion artifacts in a fast-moving scene.

The ready-to-use module features on-chip dToF processing, which needs no additional external components or calibration. 

To lift camera-assist performance, VL53L9CX supports macro up to telephoto photography, and enables laser autofocus, bokeh, and cinematic effects for still and video at 60fps. For virtual reality (VR) systems, the accurate depth and 2D images enable enhanced spatial mapping which supports immersive gaming plus virtual visits or 3D avatars. The ability to detect edges of small objects at short and ultra-long ranges also supports simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM).

The field of view (FoV) is 71° diagonal, with 1° angular resolution across a 55° x 42° FoV. The combination of long distance ranging up to 9m, and high resolution benefits applications which include people counting, content monitoring, gesture recognition and smart building. Full-resolution processed data is streamed at up to 100Hz, to provide one of the fastest, truly integrated dToF 3D LiDAR modules.

In outdoor applications, the VL53L9CX operates under strong ambient light and is compatible with a wide range of cover glass materials.

The VL53L9CX is certified as Class 1 laser safe and incorporates multilevel laser-safety checks which ensure eye safety and operational reliability.
