Automotive Ethernet PHY protects and adds efficiency for in-vehicle networking

As a third-generation automotive 100/1000Base-T1 physical layer transceiver (PHY), the BRIGHTLANE™ 88Q222xM from Infineon is a single-pair Ethernet PHY which supports operation over unshielded twisted pair (UTP).

Data exchange is secured on a hop-by-hop basis by the integrated MACsec, to protect against Layer 2 in-vehicle networking security threats, such as intrusion, man-in-the-middle, and replay attacks.

To enhance efficiency, the BRIGHTLANE™ 88Q222xM is compliant with OPEN Alliance TC10, IEEE 802.3bp and IEEE 802.3bw, and supports reduced pin count GMII (RGMII) and SGMII for direct connection to a MAC/switch port.

The integration of media dependent interface (MDI) termination resistors into the PHY simplifies board layout and reduces board cost by cutting the number of external components. A voltage regulator in the 88Q222xM generates all of the required voltages, and the PHY can run from a single 3.3V supply, in addition to supporting 1.8V, 2.5V, and 3.3V LVCMOS I/O standards.

The advanced mixed-signal processing enables equalization, echo and crosstalk cancellation, as well as data recovery and error correction at 1Gbps data rate. Robust performance is added to the ability of the 88Q222xM to exceed the management of electromagnetic interference (EMI) requirements in noisy environments, and with very low power dissipation.
