Current-sensing resistors raise power density in compact stages
For compact automotive and industrial current-sensing circuits, the KRL series from Susumu International Inc. provides a high-current surface-mount resistor family designed for efficient heat dissipation.
Compact power stages need current-sensing resistors that can carry high current without creating local hot spots or unstable resistance readings. The KRL series uses metal foil as the resistive material, with a face-down structure that places the alumina substrate above the foil resistor. This construction spreads heat through the substrate and into the surrounding air.
Heat-conductive adhesive sits between the foil resistor and the alumina substrate. This layer helps buffer mechanical stress caused by different thermal expansion rates in the ceramic material and the printed circuit board (PCB).
The lower terminal path also helps reduce the electrical path length from the resistive body to the board connection. This supports stable current measurement in dc-dc converters, ac-dc converters, inverters, motors, and automation equipment.
The KRL series is AEC-Q200 compliant, supporting use in automotive electronics and other applications exposed to temperature cycling. Versions include high-temperature and low thermal electromotive force types.
