Extend IoT and analog sensor battery life with an energy-saving sub-GHz wireless MCU

Cut power consumption for RF wireless applications in the sub-1GHz license-free industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) and short range device (SRD) frequency bands, with the STM32WL31KBV6 ultra-low-power wireless MCU from STMicroelectronics.

The low transmit current is down to 10mA at 10dBm, and receive current is down to 5.8mA, with the current in deepstop sleep mode as low as 960nA.

Operating in frequency bands from 413MHz to 479MHz, and 826MHz to 958MHz, the STM32WL31KBV6 is a single-core MCU based on a 64MHz, Arm® 32-bit Cortex®-M0+ CPU core. This core is supported by 128KB Flash memory, 16KB RAM, and 1KB one-time programmable (OTP) memory.

Multiple analog peripherals include internal ADC with single-ended and differentials, in addition to communication over PWM, I2C, LPUART, USART, and two SPI. The integrated security enables secure boot for write protection and sensitive information is stored in Flash with read-out protection.

Flexible mapping of the seven DMA channels supports direct data transfer between memory and peripherals, as well as from memory to memory.

Configure the STM32WL31KBV6 MCU to operate standalone to manage the application code and proprietary sub-1GHz protocol stacks, or use the MCU for network processing.

In addition to power-saving modes, the STM32WL31KBV6has a power supply from 1.7V to 3.6V for operation in the temperature range from -40°C to 105°C.

For battery-operated applications, current consumption is minimized by the integrated highly efficient SMPS step-down converter and the transition speed between the low-power and active states.
