New dual-band Wi-Fi 6 microcontrollers for IoT and connected home

The Wi-Fi® 6 and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth® LE combo MCUs from Renesas support 2.4GHz and 5GHz connectivity with ultra-low power consumption and dynamic band selection, based on real-time conditions.

The RA6W1 dual-band Wi-Fi 6 wireless microcontrollers are available now, and the RA6W2 MCU with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) is due for imminent release. Also available now are the Wi-Fi 6 RRQ61001, and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth LE RRQ61051 modules which accelerate development by integrating certified RF components and wireless connectivity stacks, for pre-validated RF connectivity to comply with the global network standard.

Offering superior throughput and low latency the Wi-Fi 6 MCUs extend sleep times without compromising cloud connectivity and power consumption. Critical real-time control, with remote diagnostics and over-the-air (OTA) updates, are enabled by the Target Wake Time (TWT) feature.

The connected Wi-Fi features power consumption at an ultra-low 200nA to 4µA in sleep mode, and under 50µA in Delivery Time Indication Message (DTIM10).

These MCUs are scalable to simplify the development of cost-effective, standalone IoT applications, and integrate communication interfaces in addition to analog peripherals. The MCUs also have no need for an external MCU. Used as connectivity and networking add-ons for Renesas RA MCUs, the RA6W1 and RA6W2 are certified to Matter 1.4. and provide matter-certified interoperability and robust security.

Full software support enables the Wi-Fi 6 MCUs to use the Flexible Software Package (FSP) and e² studio integrated development environment to give seamless reuse of software across the RA family of MCUs.

The Renesas product longevity program provides 15-year support for the MCUs and 10 years for the modules.
