Quad-core MPU ideal for industrial Ethernet and multi-axis motor control systems

The new RZ/T2H application processor from Renesas enables fast real-time control in industrial equipment. Motor control applications are enabled by fast CPU operation and dedicated motor interfaces and timers.

Renesas has introduced the RZ/T2H, a high-performance microprocessor which enables high-speed, high-precision control of industrial robot motors over up to nine axes.

The new MPU, which supports a variety of network communication protocols, including industrial Ethernet, is suitable for various demanding industrial applications. The performance is sufficient to enable OEMs to replace multiple MPUs or a combination of FPGAs with a single MPU to control these applications.

The RZ/T2H features four Arm® Cortex®-A55 application processor cores with a maximum operating frequency of 1.2 GHz, and supports 32-bit LPDDR4-3200 external DRAM. This architecture allows the RZ/T2H to perform highly CPU- and memory-intensive tasks such as:

  • Running applications on a Linux® operating system
  • Robot trajectory generation
  • Sequence processing in a programmable logic controller

The Renesas RZ/T2H can also accurately control up to a 9-axis servo motor operating at high speed. Multi-axis motor control is enabled by features including 3-phase PWM timers, delta-sigma interfaces for measuring current values, and various encoder interfaces.

Two Cortex-R52 CPUs with a maximum operating frequency of 1 GHz handle real-time processing functions, with each core backed by a total of 576 kbytes of tightly-coupled memory (TCM).

Flexible support for network communications

The RZ/T2H has four Ethernet ports, three Gigabit Ethernet media access controllers (MACs), and an Ethernet switch. The MPU also supports EtherCAT, PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, OPC UA, and the next-generation Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) standard. The combination of the Ethernet switch and MACs allows the MPU to support multiple industrial Ethernet controllers and devices, providing flexibility to adapt to a wide range of controller requirements, such as upper-layer Ethernet communications.

The RZ/T2H MPU is supported by the Renesas Flexible Software Package (FSP), alongside a Linux operating system package which is backed by long-term support. An out-of-the-box multi-axis motor control evaluation solution is available, including inverter boards for driving 9-axis motors, a multi-axis motor control software package, and Motion Utility Tool.
