Three-phase BLDC motor gate drivers with power module, sleep mode and op amps

Capable of driving three external NMOS transistor pairs, the MCP8021 and MCP8022 are three-phase brushless dc (BLDC) power modules which integrate three half-bridge drivers for external high- and low-side NMOS MOSFETs.

The MOSFET gate drives feature independent input control, and peak output current is 0.5 A at 12 V. The fixed output linear regulator offers true current foldback, is rated for 70 mA at 3.3 V or 5.0 V, and supplies power to the host and to the peripherals. An over-temperature sensor is also integrated.

The power modules feature protection against shoot-through, in addition to over-current and short-circuit conditions. There is also a dedicated FAULT pin and under-voltage lockout on the gate drive. This is in addition to 4.5 V under-voltage shutdown and 6.2 V under-voltage lockout on the supply voltage. Over-voltage lockout is at 29 V, and the power modules also feature thermal shutdown.

To simplify design, the gate drive power modules offer configurable dead time and blanking time, in addition to enabling or disabling Sleep mode.

The MCP8021 is packaged in a 28-lead 5 mm x 5 mm VQFN, and the 40-lead VQFN package of the MCP8022 measures 5 mm x 5 mm.
