USB PD EPR solution combines USB Type-C port controller with buck-boost battery charger

The RAA489118 and RAA489400 from Renesas offer high efficiency and a comprehensive set of safety features to enable OEMs to build a USB Type-CĀ® power supply into consumer or light industrial products.

Renesas has introduced the RAA489118 buck-boost battery charger and the RAA489400 USB Type-C port controller. The two new ICs combine to provide a solution for Extended Power Range (EPR) USB Power Delivery (PD) systems.

The two ICs are supported by a development environment and pre-certified USB reference designs to help OEMs to get to market quickly with USB PD designs.Ā

The RAA489118 functions as either a battery charger supporting from two to seven battery cells in series, or as a voltage regulator operating from a 30 V input to supply a 30 V output. The charger employs the patented Robust Ripple Regulator (R3ā„¢) technology, which combines the best features of fixed-frequency and hysteretic PWM technologies. R3 modulation technology produces acoustic noise-free operation, fast dynamic response, and best-in-class light-load efficiency for longer battery life.

The RAA489118 includes an SMBus interface, which allows it to work seamlessly with the RAA489400 and other components in USB-C PD implementations. The input and output voltage levels also match mainstream solar power voltage levels, making this an ideal fit for portable solar power stations.

The RAA489400 port controller supports USB-PD power supplies up to 48 V/5 A. Its key features include:

  • Integrated PHY
  • Sink and source power path gate drivers with external FETs
  • Short-circuit protection
  • Bus voltage discharge
  • Dead battery support
