Integrated flyback converters with GaN switch save space and raise efficiency
The VIPerGaN ac-dc converters draw on STMicroelectronics wide bandgap technology to achieve high conversion efficiency and low losses, making them ideal for USB chargers and other compact power products.

The STMicroelectronics VIPerGaN family of offline flyback power converters feature an integrated gallium nitride (GaN) power switch to enhance energy efficiency and simplify thermal management.
The VIPerGaN single-switch quasi-resonant flyback converters are available with a choice of three output-power ratings: 50 W, 65 W, and 100 W. Each converter combines a PWM controller with a high-voltage enhancement-mode GaN power transistor, and allows for secondary-side regulation using a standard optocoupler.
Housed in a 5 mm x 6 mm QFN package and integrating multiple control and protection features, the VIPerGaN converters enable designers of switch-mode power supplies to achieve superior power density and to save bill-of-materials cost. Thanks to advanced power management and low quiescent current, the converters consume standby power of less than 30 mW when operating in adaptive burst mode.
The VIPerGaN converters operate in quasi-resonant mode with dynamic blanking time and valley synchronization to reduce switching losses and maximize efficiency at all input line and load conditions.
